New version of the GRE will take half as much time to complete

ABAJournal — Starting in September, the time to take the Graduate Record Examinations will be less than two hours, which is about half its current length, according to a May 31 news release from the Educational Testing Service, which is responsible for the GRE and designs the exam.

UMass Law accepts GRE for admissions

UMASS LAW –Applicants to UMass Law can now choose to submit either the results of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or the results of the Law School Admission Test (LSAT) with their law school application. In a November 2021 decision, the Council for the Section of Legal Education of the American Bar Association voted to permit law schools to accept GRE test scores from applicants in lieu of an LSAT score. The decision follows a successful six-year review by the Educational Testing Service (ETS) on the use of the GRE for law school admission. “Expanding access to justice is at the core of our identity as a public law school,” said UMass Law Dean Eric Mitnick. “Part of expanding access to justice is increasing access to legal education, so it is heartening to know that students will have multiple pathways to law school admission.” The GRE is generally considered a more convenient and more widely available testing option, offering the ability to take the exam at any time of the year, either on a computer at home or in more than 1,000 test centers across more than 160 countries.

Loyola Law New Orleans to accept GRE for admissions

BIZ NEW ORLEANS — The Loyola University New Orleans College of Law announced that it has changed its admissions policy to allow applicants to submit either the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or the Law School Admissions Test (LSAT) to be considered for the school’s three-year Juris Doctor program. The decision comes a month after the American Bar Association officially announced it was allowing law schools to accept either test. “This is such an exciting opportunity for Loyola Law to reach a broader group of applicants,” said Loyola Law Dean Madeleine Landrieu in a press release. “To solve tomorrow’s problems, we need diverse and innovative leaders — engineers, doctors, nurses, journalists, accountants, business and healthcare leaders, entrepreneurs, and first-generation applicants — who want to pursue the study and practice of law. Those with existing GRE scores can now apply for admission without having to sit for yet another exam.” 76 of 197 ABA-approved law schools, including Harvard University College of Law, Boston College Law School and Georgetown University Law Center, already accept the GRE for admissions, so the decision is not unprecedented.

More law schools could accept GRE for admissions after ABA decision

REUTERS — After five years of debate, the American Bar Association will allow law schools to use the Graduate Record Examinations — better known as the GRE — in admissions, with no strings attached. The decision to put the GRE on equal footing with the Law School Admission Test, reached in a closed ABA session earlier this month, has some legal educators predicting a new wave of schools will begin to accept the GRE as an alternative to the LSAT. It could also spur the nearly 80 schools that already allow the GRE to accept it more broadly. Schools that currently allow the GRE have used it sparingly — fewer than 1% of 2020’s first-year class was admitted with a GRE score, ABA data shows. Until now, law schools had to supply additional research on the GRE’s reliability to the ABA to justify beginning to use the test. The ABA has allowed the LSAT for decades. “I would be surprised if a number of schools don’t announce, almost immediately, that they will take the GRE,” said Marc Miller, dean of the University of Arizona James E. Rogers College of Law, which in 2016 became the first law school to accept the GRE. Alberto Acereda, an executive with Educational Testing Service, which develops and administers the GRE, called the ABA’s decision a “testament to the value” of the test in law school admissions.

ABA legal education section council votes to allow GRE for law school admission under current standard

ABA JOURNAL — In a closed session, the council of the ABA’s Section of Legal Education and Admissions to the Bar recently voted in favor of allowing law schools to accept Graduate Record Examination scores from applicants in place of Law School Admission Test scores. The change is effective immediately. According to a news release, the topic falls under Standard 503, which requires that law schools use a “valid and reliable” admission test to assess applicants’ capabilities of completing law school. Before the council’s November decision, schools had to demonstrate that entrance exams other than the LSAT were valid and reliable, including the GRE. The development deals with the application of the standard and is not a revision, so it does not require concurrence from the ABA House of Delegates, according to Bill Adams, ABA managing director of accreditation and legal education.

New report recommends additional evaluation of the GRE’s ability to predict law student success

REUTERS — The arm of the American Bar Association that accredits law schools shouldn’t put the Graduate Record Examination on equal footing with the Law School Admission Test without more data on how it predicts first-year grades, according to a new report by researchers the ABA tasked with evaluating the GRE’s promise. The ABA’s Section of Legal Education and Admission to the Bar is giving the public until Oct. 31 to weigh in on the report, which has opened a new front in the long-running battle over whether ABA standards should explicitly allow the use of the GRE in admissions, as they do the LSAT.

Most graduate programs at UC Berkeley drop GRE requirement

INSIDE HIGHER ED — Only 13 of more than 125 graduate programs at the University of California, Berkeley, will require the Graduate Record Examination for admission next year, the university announced this week. Most departments eliminated GRE requirements last year due to difficulties applicants had in taking the exam during the COVID-19 pandemic. But the majority of Berkeley’s departments this year again chose not to require the GRE.Berkeley, like most universities with many graduate programs, leaves the decision on admissions requirements to the individual departments. But the change at Berkeley — at a time when most applicants could take the GRE — is significant.
